St Andrew’s Music Academy Spring/Summer Concert Series 2011

Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg (trumpet) and Diedrick Basson (organ) perform works by Gibbons, Bach, Telemann, Gabrieli and Balbastre.

Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg studied at Stellenbosch, UNISA and the Rotterdam Conservatoire and holds a BAMus, BMus (Hons), MMus, DMus, UM, LRSM, UVLM and MBA. While studying with Theo Mertens in Holland he also had the opportunity to attend and play at master classes presented by Adolph Herseth, Maurice Andre, Timofei Dokshitzer, Edward Tarr and Peter Maceuse. He competed nationally and internationally and was awarded first prizes in amongst other, the ATKV Forte, Oude Meester, Bottineau, Twents Conservatorium Prijs, Natal 75th Anniversary Prize, the Mabel Quick Prize, and was awarded special scholarships by the SABC, NZAV, Van Ewijk Stichting and the CSIR. He played for the KZNPO from 1990-1997 and joined the Hilton College music department in 1997 where he was appointed Director of Music in 2000. Paul, senior lecturer in Brass and Musicology in the Music Department of the University of the Free State, has recently returned from doing post-doctoral research in Music entrepreneurship as faculty in residence at the school of music at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. He has performed as soloist with all the major South African Orchestras, has made numerous recordings for the SABC and has toured as Organ and Trumpet duo playing at all the major national arts festivals while his first CD was released in 2000.

Diederick Basson studied under Danie Smit, Wim Viljoen, Boudewijn Scholten and Pieter de Lange at the Universities of Pretoria, Stellenbosch and South Africa.  He obtained a Masters Degree in Music and holds licentiates from UNISA in Performance, Teaching and Church Music (Organ) (all obtained cum laude). In 1997 he furthered his studies under the late Ewald Kooiman, then Professor of Organ at the Free University of Amsterdam, specialising in the interpretation of French and German Baroque music. He is currently busy with PhD studies at the Northwest University in Potchefstroom. Diederick is a member of the South African Academy of Science and Arts, and chairman of the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod. Apart from serving on the Executive Committee of the Southern African Church Organists Society, he also serves as co-editor of the society’s journal, Vir die Musiekleier. He is head of the music department at Stellenberg High School, organist at the Tafelberg Dutch Reformed Church in Cape Town, part-time organ lecturer at UWC’s Centre for the Performing Arts, and freelance presenter at Fine Music Radio. He occasionally joins a jazz ensemble as double bass player.
