St Mark’s Passion by Reinard Keiser

St Mark’s Passion by Reinard Keiser

Today, the St Mark’s Passion by Reinhard Keiser is a rarely performed work, but it was performed by JS Bach himself on several occasions. It is said that it served as the model for Bach’s own famous St John’s and St Matthew’s Passions.

Similarly scored for soloists, choir, and orchestra, Keiser’s St Mark’s Passion is much more concise than the far better-known ones by Bach, but still holds its place as a work of profound expressivity.

For period performances of this work at the beginning of Holy Week, the Cape Consort expands its forces to eight singers, two Baroque violins, two Baroque violas, and basso continuo.
