ATKV-Muziq for the first time in Potchefstroom

18.07.2016   ATKV-Muziq is the ATKV’s annual contribution to instrumental classical music in South Africa. It takes the form of a classical music competition for young adult musicians and the prize money that can be won totals R172 000.

This year the competition will be held for the first time at the Conservatory Hall of the School of Music on the campus of the North-West University in Potchefstroom. The second round starts on Friday the 22nd of July, at 10:00. The third (final) round takes place on Saturday 23rd of July, at 19:00.

Instrumentalists from 15 to 27 years of age qualify to enter the Muziq competition. The first round took place in May earlier this year. The acclaimed pianist John Theodore and the renowned violinist Denise Sutton travelled throughout South Africa to select the 10 best possible candidates to participate in the second round. The following musicians were selected:

Megan-Geoffrey Prins (Piano)
Sulayman Human (Piano)
Anna van der Merwe (Violin)
Samantha Durrant (Violin)
Tatiana Thaela (Flute)
Marnus Greyling (Organ)
Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg (Violin)
Richard Rheeder (Piano)
Alice Clegg (Piano)
Ryan Kirsten (Guitar)

Because of overseas obligations violinist, Anna van der Merwe is not able to attend the competition. Clarinettist Férrol-Jon Davids will therefore participate in Anna’s place. He is a student at the University of Stellenbosch and Jimmy Reinders is his teacher.

The panel of adjudicators is lead by Arisa Voges (former director of Unisa’s Directorate of Music). She will be joined by Tinus Botha (music lecturer at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus), Ashan Peiris (music lecturer at the University of Zululand), Vaughan Pietersen (head of the Frank Pietersen Music Centre in Paarl) and renowned violinist, Johanna Roos.

To book seats for the final round that will be held on Saturday 23rd of July, at 19:00, please phone the project coordinator, Ilse Schürmann, at 082 851 7157 after hours or Louisa van Rensburg at 011 919 9009 during office hours. Admission is free but it is essential to book in advance for the final round.

The overall winner will receive prize money of R60 000 at the final round. A second prize to the value of R30 000 and a third prize worth R15 000 will be awarded as well as the finalists will receive R10 000 each. An additional prize of R8 500 for the Best Interpretation of a South African work during the second round as well as a R8 500 prize for the Best Interpretation of a Baroque or Classical work during the final round are also at stake.

The national Afrikaans radio station, RSG, is again this year’s media partner for both the ATKV-Muziq and the ATKV-Muziqanto competitions.
