Cape Town Philharmonic’s winter season in June

01.06.2016  The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s winter season of 3 concerts begins at the City Hall on June 16, when Bernhard Gueller steps up to the podium.

Peter Martens will play the sublime Dvorák Cello Concerto, while Gueller and the CPO will play the passionate Fifth Symphony by Tchaikovsky and Overture, a sparkling work with film idioms by Cape Town composer Shaun Crawford. The next two concerts will be conducted by CPO principal conductor Martin Panteleev. On June 23, the soloist will be Polish pianist Maciej Grzybowski in the powerful Piano Concerto in A minor by Schumann. Erik Dippenaar will be the soloist in the main work on the programme, the Organ Symphony by Saint-Saëns. The concert will open with Revelation by young composer Christo Jankowitz.

Panteleev will conduct the final concert on June 30 with Korean-American violinist Rachel Lee Priday (photo) in Prokofiev ‘s First Violin Concerto in D. Ravel’s Alborado del Gracioso will open the concert; the main work will be the colourful Symphonic Dances by Rachmaninov. All concerts are preceded by a pre-concert talk by Rodney Trudgeon at 7.15 in the Sunken Lounge, open to concertgoers. (Although not part of the season, the CPO together with Cape Town Opera and Artscape, is hosting the finals of the 35th Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition at Artscape on July 2, conducted by Kamal Khan.)

The two new works in this season are the result of a partnership with the SAMRO Foundation/ConcertsSA to include new works by talented young South African composers. The CPO and SAMRO share the same ideals … to showcase up and coming young South African composers and enable them to have their works played by a professional orchestra and distinguished conductor.

Says CEO of the CPO Louis Heyneman, “this is a partnership with long-term benefits and we look forward to programming more works in forthcoming seasons.”

For those unable to go to the City Hall, the concerts will be broadcast live on FMR 101.3 which is available on the internet http://www.fmr.co.za. More information about this season on cpo.org.za or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) .
