Four opera singers en route to Belvedere

26.04.2013   The 32nd International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition is currently hosting qualifying rounds across the globe. The selection panel visited Cape Town earlier this month and four young South African opera singers qualified to take part in this year’s competition. The 2013 qualifying rounds are held in 55 cities world-wide.

Sarah-Jane Brandon (soprano), Tshepo Moagi (tenor), Owen Metsileng (baritone), and Thato Machona (bass-baritone) were selected to compete in Amsterdam with singers from all continents. The competition takes place from 29 June to 6 July.

The jury this year includes Cape Town Opera’s Artistic Director, Christine Crouse, as well as opera directors and casting directors from renowned opera house from all over the world, including Covent Garden, Houston Grand Opera, De Nederlandse Opera and Metropolitan Opera.

The first prize in the competition is € 7000, the second prize € 3500 and the third prize € 2500. There is also an audience prize of € 2000 and a prize of € 1500 awarded by an International Media-Jury. Engagements to opera houses, if a role is available and appropriate quality is given, have been donated by opera houses, including Cape Town Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz München.

The International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition is a leading “springboard” for a career in opera. Past participants and prizewinners include Angelika Kirchschlager, Angela Gheorghiu, Ildikó Raimondi, Elisabete Matos, Elina Garanča and the South African sopranos Pretty Yende, Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi and Sally du Randt.
