Gueller appointed as principal guest conductor of Cape Town Philharmonic

09.09.2016  Bernhard Gueller has been appointed as the Principal Guest Conductor of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

His association with orchestras in Cape Town goes back to his debut with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra in 1994, after which he came to conduct almost annually, making the city his home in 1998.

He is currently music director of Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax in Canada, a position he has held since 2003 and will relinquish in about two years to become conductor laureate there.

He has also been principal conductor of the CTPO, music director of the Nuremberg Symphony, and principal guest conductor of the JPO and the Victoria Symphony. For the CPO, says CEO Louis Heyneman, this is good news as Gueller will return to spend more time in the city.

“We value his experience, his gravitas and the care he takes with musicians, not only in the orchestra but those he accompanies. In the recent concert with Johan Botha and friends, the Cape Times noted how he seemed like a caring father to the young singers. He is also known for his interpretations, passions and mastery of all the genres of music and an innovative approach to programming.

A new CD with orchestrations of Schubert art songs by traditional and contemporary composers with with Symphony Nova Scotia is being released this month.

“Gueller is delighted to accept the honour. “The orchestra in Cape Town has been close to my heart for more than 20 years. I admire the musicians for the way they have flourished in difficult times and I know that together we continue to make excellent music.”
