Stefan Temmingh joins ranks of music greats with Echo Klassik award

12.10.2016 At a gala event event held at the Konzerthaus in Berlin on Sunday 9 October, South African born recorder virtuoso, Stefan Temmingh, received the Echo Klassik 2016 Award for Instrumentalist (Flute).

Widely regarded as the most prestigious awards for classical music recordings, Temmingh joined the ranks of star musicians Anna Netrebko, Philippe Jaroussky, Grigory Sokolov and Pinchas Zukerman.

Temmingh received the award for his CD recording, Birds, on which the theme is birds in baroque music. The recording features soprano, Dorothee Mields, his baroque ensemble „The Gentleman’s Band” and string players of La Folia Barockorchester.

Jonas Kaufmann’s Nessun Dorma: the Puccini Album (Sony Classical) was named as the bestseller of the year, but singer Philippe Jaroussky took the prize for male singer of the year.

As well as being named conductor of the year, Antonio Pappano picked up the award for best concert recording (19th century music) for his disc of Brahms and Bartók with Janine Jansen and the London Symphony Orchestra (Decca).

Andrea Bocelli (Cinema), John Wilson Orchestra (Cole Porter in Hollywood) and Salut Salon (Carnival Fantasy) each receiveed classical without borders awards, and the Berlin Philharmonic, Capella de la Torre and German Brass received the prizes for ensemble/orchestra
