Neil Smit completed his horn studies with both Peter Amon and Sorin Osorhean and graduated in 2006 with BMus Honours cum laude from the University of Cape Town.

Since 2002 he has been an active and regular Ad-hoc player with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra having gained much of his orchestral playing experience there. He has to date worked with some of the country’s leading orchestras - among them the Johannesburg Philharmonic, Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa .

In 2005 he held a cadet position in the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra as part of their exclusive orchestral training program and has since been invited back to work with this orchestra on a regular basis.

In recent years Neil’s performing interests have shifted more towards chamber music and apart from serving as first horn in various chamber orchestras, his appearance in smaller ensembles also now form regular fixtures in his schedule.

Neil is also deeply committed to the performance of new horn music having commissioned various works by South African composers; and for this purpose he is currently collaborating with a number of composers in creating chamber works for different instrumental combinations that include the horn.

This initiative falls in conjunction with his MMus studies at the University of Stellenbosch where he occupies a part-time lecturing post at the Department of Music.  In 2011 Neil has been elected as secretary of the South African Horn Society, which holds annual symposia at different centres throughout the country.
