Stefan Lombard was 16 years old when he made his solo debut as pianist with the CAPAB orchestra playing the Khatchaturian Piano Concerto. He went on to study piano performance at the University of Cape Town under Lamar Crowson and Laura Searle and subsequently studied abroad at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, England, under Renna Kellaway. Other concerto performances include Rachmaninov no 1 and 2 , Beethoven no 1 and Emperor Concerto ,and Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos. More recently he was the soloist in a performance of the Beethoven Choral Fantasy as well the Triple Concerto by the same composer.

Besides a B.Mus degree in Performing at University of Cape Town, he holds cum laude diplomas from UNISA and Asociated Royal Schools of Music in both Piano and Organ.

After graduating , and some experience in teaching ,Stefan found his niche mainly in chamber music.  He held position as one of the official accompanists at the University of Stellenbosch for three years. During this time he covered a substantial amount of the vocal singing and art song repertoire.

He has performed with the leading orchestras in South Africa both as soloist and orchestral instrumentalist. A particular interesting project was playing the continuo part for the 2008 William Kentridge’s Magic Flute production, which had to be created in the style of Mozart, as it was not in excistence.

A keen arranger as well, he assisted with recordings with, and orchestrated for the Wellington Sinfonia in New Zealand.

He is a keen exponent of repertoire of music for two pianos and has released his own arrangements and transcriptions from compositions ranging from Vivaldi to the Broadway songs of Kander and Ebb. He was one of the musical directors and arrangers for the popular Divine Divas, touring to all the major opera houses in South Africa and culminating in a performance at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

He has been involved in compiling concerts, and performing in corporate events, classical soirees and festivals, chamber music concert series, and has coached and performed for Cape Town Opera on an ad hoc basis.

Besides covering an extensive repertoire in vocal , instrumental accompaniment and chamber music, Stefan also crosses over into musical theatre and has musically directed and conducted numerous contemporary productions, some of the most noteworthy being the productions of CATS, which he performed in more than 13 countries worldwide, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, and Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins. He is equally at home on the cabaret stage as he is on the classical concert stage.

A classical musician at heart , Stefan enjoys exploring the boundaries, merging of different styles and working towards making music accessible to a wider audience base. Besides also being a keen renovator of apartments in his spare time, Stefan stays constantly busy as pianist, chamber musician, conductor and arranger. Immediate future plans include recording his first CD, which promises to cover the versatility of this multi-faceted musician.
