In The Dark :: MESSIAEN

In The Dark :: MESSIAEN

IN THE DARK’s third concert this year features the magical music of one of the 20th Century’s most important composers: Oliver Messiaen.

Apart from writing very complex harmonies, melodies and rhythms, Messiaen was also a keen ornithologist - something that is evident notably in the fantastic work “Le Merle Noir” (The Blackbird) for flute and piano, incorporating stylised bird songs. This epic piece will be performed on the evening, alongside the mammoth Second World War piano duo “Visions de l’Amen”. Messiaen also claimed that he perceived colours when he heard certain musical structures.

Drink in this synaesthesia in darkness, with blindfolds to add to the experience. Featured artists are the pianists, Nicholas Haralambous and Dominic Daula, with a special guest appearance by flautist , Gabriele Von Durckheim.
