OSMC wins first prize at 2017 International Ictus Online Competition

18.09.17   The OSM Camerata, conducted by Xavier Cloete and Gerhard de Jager, has recently been chosen as first prize winner in the University Orchestra Category in the annual Ictus International Competition in Philadelphia, USA.

The Ictus Competition is an online competition for ensembles, orchestras and bands who compete through video submission. This means that the OSM Camerata was able to compete without having to travel abroad.

Apart from the money prize the ensemble will receive a visit by Alexander Serio, Executive Director of the Ictus International Music Competition, in order to congratulate the orchestra and for an interview with the conductor.  This interview will then be broadcast to share their hard work and passion for music internationally.

The jury of adjudicators consisted of five renowned maestri which include Stilian Kirov who has just been awarded with the 1st prize in the Debut Berlin Competition. Each of the adjudicators will provide a detailed written report.

The OSM Camerata took part in this competition as part of their fifth anniversary.  The ensemble was founded in 2012 by Marius Coetzee as the Odeion School of Music’s flagship chamber ensemble with the main objective of creating a catalyst for excellence in the training of professional orchestral players and conductors.

Mentorship is applied by acquiring the services of exceptionally talented young international and/or South African musicians as instructors to prepare the OSMC members preceding a concert and/or project in the longer term. The application of junior experts is validated by transversal benefits generated through the transferral of knowledge through the teaching mode of peer-to-peer instruction.

In 2013 the OSM Camerata was selected and invited to participate at the 13th International Conservatoire Festival presented in St Petersburg (Russia). They received a standing ovation after their gala performance in the Glazunov Hall at the Rimsky Korsakov Conservatory.

They specialise in performing works by living composers; many of them being world premieres. Since the inception of the ensemble they have premiered fifteen new works by South African composers

The two conductors leading the OSM Camerata in this competition were Xavier Cloete and Gerhard de Jager.  Gerhard studied at UCT and participated in the prestigious International Sibelius Orchestral Conducting competition in Finland, where he reached the final round as runner up.

Xavier Cloete won the 2nd National Len van Zyl Conductor’s Competition conducting the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra for the final round and won every category. After studying with world famous conductors, he made his international debut with the St. Michel’s City Orchestra in Finland in April 2014.

The OSM CAMERATA will present a gala concert in Cape Town towards the end of October under the baton Xavier Cloete the current principal conductor of the OSMC.

A part of this concert will be dedicated to honour esteemed South African Composer Hendrik Hofmeyr who is turning 60 this year. More detailed information will be released in the press soon.
