- Apply now, Mimi Coertse Scholarship

Applications for the 2010 Mimi Coertse Scholarship, awarded to singers up to the age of 30, are being accepted by the University of Pretoria until 6 September.

The value of the 2010 scholarship is twenty thousand rand for one year. It was originally established at the University of Pretoria in 1959 to give recognition to the remarkable achievements of Kammers√§ngerin Mimi Coertse as an opera singer.  The current purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial aid to singers who are no older than 30 to further their studies at a tertiary institution.

Previous winners such as Gert Potgieter (1960), Hans van Heerden (1961), Carla Pohl (1966), Rouel Beukes (1980) and Michelle Breedt (1986) have established themselves as leading South African opera singers. In 2008 the scholarship was awarded to the promising young tenor, Serame Thoabala, from Bloemfontein.

Singers who enter will have to perform one oratorium aria, one operetta aria, one Afrikaans art song, one folk song (of any country), two art songs (German, French or Italian) and two opera arias. The first round will entail the provisional adjudication of either CD or DVD recordings of the above repertoire.  These recordings together with the entry forms have to reach the Music Department of the University of Pretoria before 6 September 2010.

Candidates who are selected to proceed to the second (final) round will perform for the adjudicators at a public concert in the Musaion, University of Pretoria, on Saturday 30 October at 19:30.  The winner will be announced on the same evening.
