High school principals in the Cape Peninsula has until today to book to host Cape Town Opera’s latest school offering, Opera Tapas, at their schools from 27 to 30 July.

For this production Cape Town Opera’s Voice of the Nation Ensemble, the Thembalethu Choir of Kyayelitsha and Bless Them All Choir of Nyanga are preparing a selection of arias and ensembles from well-known operas.

Written and directed by Monde Masimini, Opera Tapas tells the comic love story of a poor cleaner, a charming baritone and three guys in tuxedos who scheme to make a rich socialite fall in love. Which guy will be the lucky one is only to be revealed only on stage. No less than 18 songs from popular musicals and composers such as Donizetti, Mozart and Bizet will be heard, with piano accompaniment by musical director Stefan Lombard.

This choral partnership is a delectable musical feast and an invitation to learners to sample a variety of CTO’s young voices. Performances will be given at schools in Athlone, Khayeltitsha and Kraaifontein from 27 to 30 July.

Opera Tapas is part of Cape Town Opera’s Educational and Community Outreach effort to develop new opera audiences and to instill a love of opera in as many South Africans as possible.
