- Bulawayo International Music Festival

Zimbabwe’s 6th Bulawayo Music Festival kicks off today, 19 May, and presents a varied programme featuring an international line-up until Sunday 23 May.

This year’s performers include pianists Leslie Howard, Elizabeth French, Michael Brownlee-Walker and Coady Green, Trevor Lax (Trumpet), guitarist James Grace, the Odeion String Quartet and Leon Bosch (Double Bass).

The repertoire will include Bach’s 3-Piano Concerto in C major, BWV1064; Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet in D major, G.448; Bottesini’s String Quintet (with double bass); Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A major, Op.81; Hummel’s Piano Quintet in E flat, Op.87; Mendelssohn’s Piano Sextet in D major, Op.110; Mozart’s String Quartet in G major, K.387; Ravel’s String Quartet in F major; Saint-SaĆ«ns’s Septet in E flat, Op.65; Schubert’s Trout Quintet, D.667 and Vivaldi’s Gloria.

There will also be a solo recital from Leslie Howard, a multi-piano concert, two all-Chopin programmes, guitar, trumpet and double-bass recitals, performances by Kit and the Widow (a very accomplished musical comedy duo), and The Mukamba Tree, a suite specially written by Richard Sisson for the festival and featuring all the participants plus a host of young performers.

Bulawayo’s cultural jewel on the arts and music calendar has stood undaunted by economic and other woes witnessed here over its entire life span. It is entirely organised by volunteers, managed by music aficionado Michael Bullivant since its inception in 1997.

The first festival, in April of that year, was conceived as a one-off, week-long multiple celebration of anniversaries: the 60th of the Bulawayo Philharmonic Orchestra, the 40th of Performing Arts Bulawayo, the 20th of the National Symphony Orchestra - and, for good measure, the 100th of the arrival of the railway in Bulawayo.

Concerts take place at the Academy of Music in the intimate Sibson Hall.

Bookings can be made in person, by telephone to (09) 60684 / 67195 or by e-mail to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
