- NewMusicSA seeks compositions

NewMusicSA is a non-profit section 21 company dedicated to supporting South African New Music and providing an important resource for composers and all those interested in contemporary music. It aims, amongst other things, to foster a sense of community surrounding New Music in South Africa which it does through its many special and unique events and activities such as the New Music Indaba and Unyazi festivals. It also provides opportunities for young composers with the composition masterclasses of the Growing Composers project, and for more advanced composers, the Visby Residencies exchange program. (Further information on the organization and its past and future activities can be found at http://www.newmusicsa.org.za).

NewMusicSA is the South African section of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). As such, it provides an important link to the international New Music community, and significantly is the only African country represented. In the past, NMSA’s day-to-day running expenses have been covered by its membership subscriptions, but now, as ISCM’s membership fees are becoming increasingly difficult to afford given the unfavorable exchange rate, it has become necessary to find additional ways of raising funds.

To raise funds for the organization, the organisation is planning a series of concerts. The first of these concerts will take place at Wits University on Saturday the 18th of September 2010. The program content will be all contemporary music, and composers are invited to contribute compositions to be performed at the concert. The selection of works will be designed to create a varied and interesting final program, and will be dependant on the performers available. It will be of great help if a performer in Johannesburg is already familiar with works being submitted and would be prepared to assist the organisation.
