- Call for Musicians : New MusicSA Concert

17 August 2010

NewMusicSA is a non-profit section 21 company dedicated to supporting South African New Music and providing an important resource for composers and all those interested in contemporary music. It aims, amongst other things, to foster a sense of community surrounding New Music in South Africa which it does through its many special and unique events and activities such as the New Music Indaba and Unyazi festivals. It also provides opportunities for young composers with the composition masterclasses of the Growing Composers project, and for more advanced composers, the Visby Residencies exchange program. (Further information on the organization and its past and future activities can be found at http://www.newmusicsa.org.za.)
NewMusicSA is the South African section of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). As such, it provides an important link to the international New Music community, and significantly is the only African country represented. In the past, NMSA’s day-to-day running expenses have been covered by its membership subscriptions, but now, as ISCM’s membership fees are becoming increasingly difficult to afford given the unfavorable exchange rate, it has become necessary to find additional ways of raising funds.
To raise funds for the organization, we are planning a series of concerts. The first of these concerts will take place at Wits University on Saturday the 18th of September 2010. The program content will be all contemporary music (an opportunity for performers to play compositions that are not part of the standard concert repertoire), and we would like to invite you to contribute a performance of your favorite contemporary work. The selection of works will be designed to create a varied and interesting final program. Please let me know if you are interested in tackling a new South African work – we have several composers who have submitted works for this concert – it would be wonderful if we could use this event as an opportunity to establish some new links between South African composers and performers!
Could teachers please pass this request on to any of their students who may be interested.
