Cape Philharmonic Orchestra kicks off 2010 with 4th International Festival

The 4th Cape Town International Summer Music Festival (28 January until 18 February 2010) kicks off today with the internationally-acclaimed British pianist John Lill (in photo) performing Rachmaninov’s monumental Third Piano Concerto with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. All tickets for this concert are sold-out and if one looks at impressive the line-up for this year’s festival, it’s advisable to secure seats that are still available for the remainder of the festival.

Another main attraction of the Festival is the participation of world famous cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, who will be performing the Cello Concerto by Shostakovich with the CPO on 11 February and give a recital on 14 February accompanied by François du Toit. Widely regarded as one of the most creative musicians of his generation & now leading England’s “In Harmony” project, Julian Lloyd Webber has won numerous awards, including the Crystal Award in 1998 & the Classic FM Red Award in 2005.

The conductors for the festival include the CPO’s Principal Guest Conductor Owain Arwel Hughes as well as the celebrated Dutch conductor Hubert Soudant & esteemed teacher, conductor & violinist, Victor Yampolsky.

More highlights include the following: On 30 January John Lill, who mesmerized Cape Audiences during his performances at the 2007 Cape Town International Summer Music Festival, can be heard in recital with Suzanne Martens (violin), Patrick Goodwin (violin) and Kristiyan Chernev (cello).

The Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra & Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble will perform a special showcase concert on 6 February, while members of the CPYO will also join the senior orchestra during the concerts of 28 January & 4 February. Venues for the festival include the City Hall, Baxter Concert Hall and the Artscape Theatre.
