Klatzow receives Huberte Rupert Prize

13.09.2012  Peter Klatzow was awarded the Huberte Rupert Prize for Classical Music by the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (SA Academy of Arts and Sciences) at an illustrious event in the HB Thom Theatre in Stellenbosch last night.

The award, established in 2006, was made in recognition of Klatzow’s lifetime contribution to music, both as a composer and for his activities in promoting other South African composers through the media of print and recording. Klatzow studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he won several of the College composition prizes as well as the Royal Philharmonic prize for composition. He spent the following years studying Italy and Paris with Nadia Boulanger. Returning to South Africa in 1966, he worked at the SABC in Johannesburg as a music producer, and in 1973 was appointed to the University of Cape Town as Professor in Composition. He is one of the few South African composers to achieve international recognition.

“The SA Academy of Arts and Sciences has a long and solid reputation of rewarding high achievement, and I am particularly delighted to follow in the footsteps of Arnold van Wyk and Hubert du Plessis, both of whom taught at UCT and developed distinguished careers as composers,” Klatzow commented.

Klatzow’s many other accolades include a Nederberg award for his music for the ballet Hamlet, and the Molteno Gold Medal presented to him by the Cape Tercentenary Foundation for a lifetime achievement in music.

Previous winners of the Huberte Rupert Prize includes Prof. Hubert van der Spuy, Prof. G.W.R. Nel, Prof. H.J. Stanford, Prof. Albie van Schalkwyk and Prof. Ella Fourie. The prize was awarded for the first time in 2007 by the Rupert Music Foundation.

The Academy strives to promote the development of science, technology and arts, including the use and quality of Afrikaans. The academy was founded in 1909 and became known especially for prestigeous literary awards. The coveted Hertzog Prize for Drama was presented to Adam Small at last night’s ceremony.
