- KZNPO National Youth Concerto Festival

As part of it’s 2010 World Symphony Series, the KZN Philharmonic presents the annual NATIONAL YOUTH CONCERTO FESTIVAL on THURSDAY, 30 SEPTEMBER 2010 under the baton of conductor Lykele Temmingh.  The Festival gives advanced music students the opportunity to rehearse and perform with a professional orchestra, thereby opening doors to a professional career.

The Festival Conprises four categories: instrumental, jazz (concertos or orchestrated compositions only), vocal and conducting.  It is open to all applicants who are bona fide music students, under the age of 25, with conductors being under the age of 35.  Applications from entrants wishing to audition must be received by 11 July 2010.

Finalists in the 2009 National Youth Concerto Festival are not permitted to apply again this year.

Applicants who have not previously been a finalist will be favoured over those who have, everything else being equal.

National auditions will be held during the week of 2 TO 7 AUGUST 2010.  Entrants will be advised of the exact audition schedule at a later date.

Entrants wishing to audition will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses, but these expenses will be paid for the finalists who are invited to appear with the Orchestra.

Successful applicants must be available for rehearsal from 27 September 2010.

• Work must be up to performance standard at the audition.
• Entrants must prodive their own accompanist.
• Instrumentalists should play one or two movements of a concerto, with a maximum performance duration of 15 minutes, although pieces of 10 minutes duration will be favoured.
• The choice of work will be of particular relevance i.e how it will contribute to an overall interesting programme for the final concert.
• Vocalists should render one aria and the item must have orchestral accompaniment.
• Applicants must audition with the item they expect to perform or sing should they be selected.
• Entrants for the conducting section need only submit their CV, on which basis they will be shortlisted.  The selected applicats will then work with the Orchestra during a pre-arranged week prior to the concert in October.  One finalist will be chosed to conduct an overture at the final concert.

Appilaction forms can be downlaoded from http://www.kznpo.co.za
