- Gérard Korsten to London Mozart Players

The UK’s first chamber orchestra, the London Mozart Players, recently announced the appointment of South-African conductor, Gérard Korsten, as its fifth Music Director. Korsten’s three-year term will begin in September 2010 although his first appearance, as Music Director designate, will be with the Orchestra at their home of Fairfield Hall, Croydon in May.

Over the next three years Gérard Korsten will be fully involved in the Orchestra’s musical development. He will conduct all of its major UK concerts and will work with the Orchestra to develop foreign touring as well as new project opportunities.

Simon Funnell, the LMP’s Managing Director, says: “We are all thrilled to be working with someone of Gérard’s experience, musicality and warmth. From his first rehearsal with us, he and the players developed a special rapport and it has been inspiring to see that relationship develop. I am convinced that Gérard’s appointment signals the beginning of a much-deserved renaissance for the UK’s first chamber orchestra.”

Gérard Korsten says about his appointment: “I was honoured to be approached by the LMP for this position. It is a fantastic orchestra with a distinguished history and the players are a delight to work with. I am very excited about the upcoming season we are planning at the moment and I believe we have a great future ahead of us.”

Gérard Korsten’s most recent appearance with the LMP was in April 2009 in a series of UK concerts in Basingstoke and Croydon, when he won over the musicians, search committee and audience with his masterful interpretation of works by Mozart, Haydn and Mendelssohn.

Korsten comes to the LMP after holding positions as Principal Conductor of the State Theatre in Pretoria, South Africa and Music Director of the Orchestra del Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Italy. He is currently Principal Conductor of the Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg Bregenz, Austria.

Korsten will be conducting the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival Orchestra at a concert in Stellenbosch on Friday 9 July 2010. For more information, consult our What’s On Calendar.
