JPO receives R36M boost from Lotto

The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) will kick off 2010 on a high note with a R36 million cash injection from the Lotto

According to Bridget van Oerle, JPO spokeswoman, the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund has agreed to fund the JPO’s four seasons of symphony concerts per year, as well as its affiliated development and education projects, for the next three years.

With four six-week seasons of high-quality music scheduled, the funding would enable the JPO, which would celebrate its tenth year of existence in 2010, to continue creating work for classical musicians and training new talent. This in addition to providing a space for connoisseurs of fine music.

The first six-week symphony season for 2010 would start on February 10 and continue until March 18. The second season would run from May 5 to June 10, the third season from July 28 to September 2 and the fourth from October 6 to November 11.

During the first season, internationally renowned South African-born conductor GĂ©rard Korsten, Bulgaria’s Emil Tabakov and Japan’s Yasuo Shinozaki would each conduct the JPO for two weeks.
