The Kwazulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra’s World Symphony Series Winter Season opens at the Durban City Hall on 13 May 2010 at 19h30. The four concert season will run until June 3 and offers a range of world class soloists and conductors.

Prize winning conductor Joseph Wolfe will open the first concert of the season with the brilliant pianist, Katya Apekisheva who will perform Beethoven’s dramatic Piano Concerto No.3. The programme also includes Wagner’s Prelude from Die Meistersinger and Beethoven’s Symphony No.4.

Renowned conductor Giorgio Croci, who has conducted many prestigious orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, will join forces with the South African string team: Suzanne Martens and David Snaith on 20 May, as they perform Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola.

Croci returns on 27 May to conduct a concert programme of operatic highlights with the exceptionally talented soprano Manon Strauss Evrard, who makes her Metropolitan Opera debut in Lulu in the 2009 – 2010 season. The programme features operatic favourites including arias from Verdi’s La Traviata and Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet.

Popular guest conductor, Arjan Tien conducts the season’s final concert on 3 June. Marlene Hemmer, a young and talented Dutch violinist, who appears thanks to the generous support of the “Interactions South African Netherlands” programme, will perform Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy. The concert also includes The South African premiere of Wagenaar’s Overture – Cyrano de Bergerac and Brahms Symphony No.1.

Pre-concert talks will once again take place at the Royal Hotel starting at 18h15. Admission is R30 and includes light refreshments.

An open rehearsal is held every Thursday morning on concert days at the Durban City Hall at 10h00; however there will be no open rehearsal on 27 May, as it is an operatic programme.

Safe and subsidised parking is available at the Royal Hotel on concert nights. Extra KZNPO security guards have been contracted and are placed in surrounding areas at the Durban City Hall.
