OSM Camerata set to perform in Stellenbosch and Cape Town

13.10.17   The OSM Camerata (OSMC) of the University of the Free State will end their 2017 concert season on a high note with two concerts presented in the Western Cape, as part of the ensemble’s fifth birthday celebrations.

On 8pm on 20 October the ensemble can be heard at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow, Cape Town. Entrance for this concert is free. On 21 October they will be on stage at the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch and bookings are at Computicket.

The repertoire for the concerts was curated for the OSMC’s participation at the 2017 International Ictus Music Competition with a substantial part of the concert programme dedicated to prolific SA composer, Hendrik Hofmeyr in honour of his 60th birthday on 20 November.

The ensemble will perform Super Flumina Babylonis, Notturno Elegiaco & Spokewals / Phantom Waltz - all works commissioned from Hofmeyr for the OSMC. The composer’s riveting Cadenza for Solo Cello will be recited by Anmari van der Westhuizen.

The Odeion School of Music will award the Order of the OSM to Prof Hendrik Hofmeyr during the concert at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in gratitude of his tremendous contribution as South African composer.

The Clarinet Concertino for Chamber Orchestra by another SA composer, Keith Moss, which was commissioned for the first International Clarinet Extravaganza presented by the OSM in 2016, will be performed with Naledi Dweba as soloist. The OSMC will also recite shorter works by Bach, Gallus, Puccini, Mascagni and Vasks.

The OSMC will be conducted by principle conductor Xavier Cloete. The mentor for the strings is OSM alumna violist Elsabe Raath from Birmingham (UK).

On the 1st of September 2017 it was announced that the OSMC received the first prize for the 2017 International Ictus Music Competition (USA) as the winner of the category for Conservatory and University Orchestras. A highlight still remains the OSMC’s participation at the 13th International Conservatory Festival in St Petersburg (Russia), where the ensemble received a standing ovation during a gala concert in the Glazunov Concert Hall at the Rimsky Korsakov Conservatory.

The world premiere of the Cello Concerto for an African Cellist by South African composer, Hans Huyssen, with SA cellist, Heleen du Plessis as soloist was another highlight. The CD was released in 2014 on the New Zealand Classical Music label, ODE RECORDS in Auckland New Zealand and was one of five CDs nominated for the Listeners’ Choice Award of the New York Violin Cello Society.

For the concerts, the ladies of the OSMC will be wearing celebrated South African fashion designer Superella’s new creation, Tsonga Kiminos.
