- Youth & Music Orchestra of Antwerp tours

The Youth and Music Orchestra of Antwerp, Belgium, will be touring the Western and Southern Cape from 18 July-2 August 2010. The orchestra, widely regarded as one of the best youth orchestras in Europe, was founded in 1963 by Ernest Van der Eyken and has since established itself firmly on the European and international orchestral calendar. The orchestra developed into a highly skilled symphonic orchestra under the leadership of Frans Cuypers, conductor from 1976 until 1998.

In 1998 Ivo Venkov became the permanent conductor of the Youth and Music Orchestra of Antwerp. Under his leadership the orchestra played many successful concerts including Cl. Debussy’s ‘Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune’ and ‘Petite Suite’ , F. Schubert’s unfinished Symphony , P.I. Tsjaikowsky Symphony No.5 , Mahler’s 1st Symphony, I. Stravinsky’s The Pulcinellasuite and Divertimento from ‘Le baiser de le fée’, Mozart’s Requiem, J. Brahm’s concerto for violin, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliette, Verdi’s Requiem and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “The New World”.

It endeavours to be an orchestra of young people making music for young people. In 1999 there was a co-operation with the Belgian actor Warre Borgmans for a remarkable children’s performance around the music of Peer Gynt (E. Grieg). With another Belgian actor Johan Terryn as a storyteller they performed S. Weiner’s ‘Ark of Noah’ and Wim Henderickx’s ‘The magic doctor and the two giants’. In November 2002 the orchestra played another story ‘Het hele leven zit erin’ with actress Ilse Van Hoecke as storyteller. The story was written by the award winning writer of children’s stories, Kaat Vrancken.

The orchestra has undertaken many international tours through the years, including the USA (1979, 1990 en 1997), Vienna (1981), Portugal (1983), Yugoslavia (1985), Germany and Hungary (1986), Italy (1992 en 2001), Great Britain (1995), Denmark (1996), Spain (1999) and Italy (2001). In July 2003 the orchestra participated at the 9th International Youth Musical in Shizuoka, Japan. In July 2005 the orchestra did a concert tour through Tuscany in Italy.

The Youth and Music Orchestra of Antwerp will perform in South Africa under the baton of Ivo Venkov with Yossif Ivanov as soloist.
