- La Traviata kicks off opera partnership

The SA State Theatre and Opera Africa kicks off a three-year creative partnership with German opera company Theater Erfurt with a multinational production of La Traviata later this month.

This pioneering co-production agreement will increase the frequency of full-scale professional operas staged in Gauteng, bringing productions hot off Europe’s finest stages and creating sustainable work opportunities for South African opera artistes.

Traviata will be staged at Pretoria’s State Theatre from 22 to 31 July.

It is directed by Swiss-born Theater Erfurt CEO Guy Montavon and will be conducted by Italian Walter Attanasie. South African cast members include Rouel Beukes, Kelebogile Boikanyo, Otto Maidi, Aubrey Lodewyk, Matthew Overmeyer and Teresa de Wit, as well as the Opera Africa Chorus.

Russian soprano Svetlana Katchour will sing the title role, American lyric tenor Erik Fenton will appear as Alfredo and Russian baritone Juri Batukov as his disapproving father.

Book at Computicket.
