- Visby Residency Exchange for SA

The exchange programme between the Visby International Centre for Composers (VICC, Gotland section of the ISCM) and NewMusicSA is now in its fourth year.

It was initiated jointly by the two organisations in December 2006 and provides 2 composition residencies a year at VICC, which is situated in the beautiful medieval town of Visby, capital of the Swedish island of Gotland. (For more details about the Centre visit http://www.centreforcomposers.org/ .) VICC can accommodate 4 composers at a time for up to 4 weeks, and under normal circumstances guests pay.

Under the VICC-NMSA agreement space is reserved for 2 South Africans free of charge. (In realistic terms and bearing in mind the exchange rate, we are effectively offering cR48 000 worth of accommodation and cR190 000 worth of studio usage, free.) The 4 weeks available to NMSA in 2011 are 6 June to 3 July. The residencies include free individual acco mmodation and free use of a well-equipped music studio for 3 to 4 weeks (we prefer residents to stay for 4 weeks). Travel and subsistence expenses are for residents’ own account, but in 2010 SAMRO/SENA gave R22 000 to help cover these costs and we shall apply again for 2011.

Applications are now open for two residencies in 2011. Please visit http://www.newmusicsa.org.za/visby.html to read the Guidelines and Conditions. If you are eligible, please complete the Visby Application Form on the NewMusicSA website. The form can be completed online, or downloaded as a pdf, printed, completed and faxed. The closing date is 31 August 2010.
