VOX Cape Town

VOX Cape Town

VOX Cape Town continues the choral legacy of the St George’s Singers, led for over fifty years by Dr Barry Smith.

Formed under the direction of John Woodland in July 2015, VOX performances will span musical history in its focus on a cappella works, oratorios and South African compositions to enrich the musical life of Cape Town.

VOX aims to invigorate local choral music through imaginative programming and staging to create intimate, immersive sensory experiences. Diverse styles are juxtaposed in an illuminating and occasionally challenging manner.

VOX is currently embarking on a series of “New Soundscapes” – one-hour concerts designed to expose Cape Town’s audiences to fresh choral sounds.

Besides performing in traditional choral spaces, VOX also favours unusual approaches such as the “In the Dark” series hosted in the Youngblood Art Gallery on Bree Street in Cape Town.

In addition to the immersive sensory experiences offered by live performances, VOX also aims to create a range of superior recordings to expand the traditional audience of choral music.

The first of these was broadcast on Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM on Christmas Eve in 2016. Outreach and community involvement are also fundamental aspects of VOX’s musical and social vision.
