Carlo Ponto joins Evita, Daniel Richards for CPYO Fundraiser

11.10.2016  Carlo Ponti, the distinguished Italian-American conductor and son of international movie star, Sophia Loren, will conduct the Cape Town Philharmonic and the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in a programme that includes two works for orchestra and narrator.

The inimitable Evita Bezuidenhout will narrate Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev, and Daniel Richards of Bring Back the Curry fame will narrate Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.

Richards is writing a script for Britten piece especially for this concert, which is selling out quickly. It will take place at the Cape Town City Hall on Sunday, November 13, at 18:00.

In the first half, the CPYO will play a selection of sparkling works like the Thunder and Lightning Polka by Johann Strauss, arrangements of Lord of the Dance, Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean, The Swan from Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns and the majestic Finlandia by Sibelius.

Ponti is widely acclaimed for the work he does with youth orchestras. He is also associate conductor of the Russian National Orchestra and has established the Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra.

Evita Bezuidenhout, a long-standing friend of the Ponti / Sophia Loren family for years, will bring her inimitable style and wit to the Prokofiev, while the script for the Britten piece has been rewritten for today’s young Capetonians by Daniel Richards.

Proceeds from the concert will go to the Darling Trust and the CPYO.
