31.05.2016   The Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow, Cape Town announced the finalists for its once-off national music competition which forms part of the centre’s 30th Anniversary celebrations.

The competition invited school-going musicians playing any orchestral instrument or piano to participate. The entries were of a high standard and the finalists include three former winners of the SAMRO National Music Competition, the cellists Sinéad Symons (2012) and Arjen van Renssen (2013) and violinist Jordan Brooks (2015).

In the junior section (up to and including Grade 7 school level) the following students will compete for R5 000 plus a gold medal to the winner; and 2nd and 3rd prizes of R2 500 and R1 500: Qden Blaauw (Parow), piano; Jordan Brooks (Fairways, Cape Town), violin; Leo Huan (Pretoria), piano; Pendo Masote (Auckland Park), violin; Ah-Young Moon (Stellenbosch), piano; Keon Müller (Blaauwberg), saxophone; Pierre-Simon Rossouw (Welgemoed), saxophone; and Liam Slabbert (Durbanville), bassoon.

In the senior section (Grade 8 up to and including Grade 12 school level) prizes of R10 000 plus a gold medal; R5 000 and R2 500 are at stake. The finalists are:
Lisa Britz (Parow North), harp; Emilio February (Pinelands), percussion; Estelle Kemp (Stellenbosch);  cello; Landi Schaap (Pretoria), piano;  Sinéad Symons (Brackenfell), cello;  Arjen van Renssen (Pretoria), cello;  Christelle Venter (Pretoria), clarinet; and Fan Simon Wu (Milnerton), piano.

The finalists will perform for the judges at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium, Parow on Thursday, 9 June (Junior Section) and on Friday 10 June (Senior Section), with a presentation ceremony at the end of each of the concerts.
