Young instrumentalists set to compete for national honours

12.09.2016  Young, promising instrumentalists from all over South Africa and one Namibian are polishing their repertoires for the sixth SAMRO Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition.

The competition takes place at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow, Cape Town from 26 to 30 September. Medals and attractive cash prizes are at stake.

The competition is hosted by the Tygerberg Branch of the SA Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) after auditions in Cape Town, Pretoria and Bloemfontein earlier this year.

The candidates, aged 13 and younger, compete in four categories (Piano, Strings, Woodwind & Brass, and Other Instruments), with an additional category for developmental groups.

Lovers of classical music are invited to attend the opening on the 26th and the first three rounds at their leisure and free of charge.

Last year’s gold medallist, the local cellist Jordan Brooks will perform as soloist with the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra on the opening night.

For the fourth round on 30 September seats have to be booked at Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre 021 939 9105 (10:00 – 18:00).
