South African Youth Choir

South African Youth Choir

The South African Youth Choir (SAYC) does not only give the children a voice, it gives them a life!

In the true spirit of Ubuntu, the choir is a human project where children of different backgrounds, cultures and statuses are developed in almost all aspects of life. They get the opportunity to build confidence, to acquire vital life and people skills and to realise that achievement is a product of hard work and discipline.

The beauty of this project is that the choir represents South Africa’s “Rainbow Nation”. SAYC is living proof that South Africans can achieve and build, despite their differences and backgrounds. Once in the choir, members forget about those differences and focus on their unique talents and what they can offer the choir. They learn to understand people from other cultures – this mutual respect usually results in healthy long term relationships.

The SAYC brings together talented young singers, giving them the opportunity to excel on artistic, social and scholastic level. Most of the members attend school at Stellenberg High School in Cape Town, a school that has established itself as one of the Western Cape’s leading academic institutions.

Since 2005, SAYC has established itself as a world class choir and choir members are committed to artistic excellence. SAYC has won several awards and prices. International awards include:
2006 Llangollen Eisteddfod, Wales   -  Gold diploma
2008 International Kathaumixw, Canada   -  Overall winner, Folklore
2008 International Kathaumixw, Canada   -  Overall winner, Chamber Choir

SAYC’s budget expenses total between R3 and R5 million depending on international and local tours. This amount covers school fees, text books, stationery, school and choir uniforms, tutor fees, hostel accommodation, food, salaries, transport, sheet music, audition expenses and administration expenses.

The choir depends on sponsorship and donations to facilitate the funding of diverse academic, boarding and schooling needs of the choir members. Your contribution and support keeps the spirit and activities of the SAYC alive.
